this unit is designed to operate on ac household current or dc (batteries). ac use the ac polarized line cord included with the unit for operation on ac power. insert one end of the ac line cord into the ac power jack on the rear of the unit and the other end (with the 2 blades) into a conve- niently located ac outlet having 120v, 60hz. when the ac cord is plugged in, the batteries will be disconnected. note: the ac plug supplied with the unit is polar- ized to help minimize the possibility of electric shock. if the ac plug does not ? into a nonpolar- ized ac outlet, do not ?e or cut the wide blade. it is the users responsibility to have an electrician replace the obsolete outlet. battery installation to use this unit with battery power, remove the battery door on thebottom of the unit by sliding the battery door off. insert eight (8) size batteries following the diagramin the compartment. note: the ac power cord must be disconnected from the ac power jack on the rear of the unit in order for the unit to operate on battery power . power sources 7 battery precautions follow these precautions when using batteries in this device: 1. use only the size and type of batteries speci?d. 2. be sure to follow the correct polarity when installing the batteries as indicated in the battery compartment. reversed batteries may cause damage to the device. 3. do not mix different types of batteries together (e.g. alkaline, rechargeable and carbon-zinc) or old batter- ies with fresh ones. 4. if the device is not to be used for a long period of time, remove the bat teries to prevent damage or injury from possible battery leakage. 5. do not try to recharge batteries not intended to be recharged; they can overheat and rupture. (follow battery manufacturers directions.) headphone jack (side of unit) for private listening, connect 3.5mm (32 ohm) stereo headphones (not included) to this jack. the speakers are automatically disconnected when the headphone plug is inserted in the jack. + C + C + C + C + C + C + C + C + C + C ac plug ac outlet
operation 8 press the power button to turn the unit on. 1 press the tuner/band button to select radio. repeatedly press the tuner/band button to select am or fm. if a stereo station is broadcast, t?ill appear. 2 manual tuning: repeatedly press the tune/skip/search o 1 or n 2 but- ton to manually advance the frequen- cy in the display up or down until thedesired frequency appears. 3 automatic tuning: press and hold the tune/skip/search o 1 or n 2 button until the frequency in the display starts to scan, and then release the button; the tuner willsearch and then stop on the next strong station it finds. repeat this step until the desired frequency appears in the display. 4 adjust the volume buttons 1 and eq button 2 as desired. repeatedly press the eq button 2 to cycle through the eq settings as follows: rock, jazz, pop, classical. 5 t o turn the radio of f , press the power button again. 6 listening to the radio antennas am Chis unit has a built--n ferrite rod antenna, which provides adequate reception in most areas. if reception is weak, turn the unit to improve reception. fm Che fm antenna is for fm reception only. if reception is weak, adjust the length and the angle of the antenna. 1 2 1 1 1 2 2 1 1 2 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1
operation (continued) 9 press the power button to turn the unit on. 1 press the tuner/band button to select radio. repeatedly press the tuner/band button to select am or fm. 2 select a station using the tune/skip/ search o 1 or n 2 button. (see the previous page for manual or auto tuning.) 3 press the prog/ch sa ve button 1 ; reset?ill appear and the number will blink in the display. press the mode/ch+ button 2 until the desired memory number appears on the dis - play . 4 press the prog/ch sa ve button again to set the station in the selected memo-ry . repeat steps 3 through 5 to program up to 20 stations for fm and 12 stations for am, if desired. 5 to recall: follow steps 1 and 2 above. repeatedly press the mode/ch+ button to select a preset; the station will automatically be tuned in. 6 setting and recalling radio presets this unit can preset 12 am and 20 fm radio stations for convenient recall. 1 2 2 1 1 2 2 1 1 2 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1 2 2 1
operation (continued) 10 press the power button 1 to turn the unit on. open the cd compartment door by pressing the open/close area 2 . place a cd on the center spindle, with the printed label side facing up. close the cd compartment door. 1 press the play/pause ( ? )/cd button to select cd; playback will start automatically . 2 adjust the volume buttons 1 and eq button 2 as desired. repeatedly press the eq button 2 to cycle through the eq set - tings as follows: rock, jazz, pop, classical. 3 press the play/pause ( / p )/cd but - ton again to pause playback; the time display will blink. press the play/pause ( / p )/cd button once again to continue playback; the time dis- play will stop blinking. 4 t o skip forward or backward through the tracks on the disc, press the tune/skip/search o 1 or n 2 button. 5 to search forward or backward through the music on a disc, press and hold the tune/skip/search o 1 or n2 button, a chattering noise will be heard. 6 to play a cd continued on the next p age 1 2 2 1 1 2 1 1 1 2 2 1 1 2 2 1 1 2 1 1 1 2 2 1
operation (continued) 11 when the disc is through playing, it will stop rotating. press the stop ( n ) but- ton to stop the disc before it is ?ished. 7 to turn the unit off, press the power button again. 8 to play a cd (continued) t o repeat a single track, press the mode/ch+ button 1 once while in the playback mode; epeat 1will light in the display. press the t une/skip/search o 2 or n 3 button to select the specific track that you wish to repeat. the specific track you selected will be repeated continuously. 1 t o repeat all of the tracks on a disc continuously , press the mode/ch+ button twice while in the playback mode; epeat allwill light. all tracks will be repeated continuously . 2 t o repea tedl y pla y back one track/all tracks notes: ? if a disc is inserted incorrectly, dirty or damaged, it will not play. ? as each track is played, the track number is shown in the display. ? to prevent damage to the disc, never open the cd door while the disc is rotat- ing. wait for the disc to stop before opening the cd door. never touch the lens when the cd door is open. ? do not use the carrying handles when playing a cd. the cd should only be used on a steady surface. to stop and cancel repeat playback, press the stop ( n ) button. 2 2 3 1 1 1 1 1 1 2 2 1 1 2 2 1

operation (continued) 13 notes on programmed play: ? programming is the ability to preselect the order in which a series of tracks will be played. ? each track may be stored in the program memory as many times as desired. ? as each track is played, its track number will be displayed. you can move for- ward or backward through the programmed tracks with the tune/skip/ search o or n button. ? the cd player will stop after all programmed tracks have been played or the stop ( n ) button is pressed. ? to stop program playback, press the stop ( n ) button. to play back the pro- gram again, press the play/pause ( / p )/cd button. ? to clear the program memories, while in the stop mode, press the stop ( n ) button; the prog indicator will disappear from the display . it is also possible to use the program and repeat functions together to repeat a specific program indefinitely. first, program the tracks you wish to hear in the order you wish to hear them, as described on page 12. press the pla y/p ause ( / p )/cd button to begin programmed playback. 1 then, press the mode/ch+ button twice. both the rog?nd ?eea t indicators will light. the player will repeatedly play back the tracks you selected in the order in which you programmed them. when the lasttrack in the program has been played, the entire program will begin again. 2 programmed repea t note: program repeat operation will continue indefinitely until you press the stop ( n ) button. 1 2 2 1 1 2 2 1

caring for compact discs ? treat the compact disc carefully. handle the com- pact disc only by its edges. never allow your ?gers to come in contact with the shiny, unprint- ed side of the compact disc. ? do not attach adhesive tape, stickers, etc. to the disc label. ? clean the compact disc periodically with a soft, lint-free, dry cloth. never use deter- gents or abrasive cleaners to clean the compact disc. if necessary, use a cd clean- ing kit. ? if a disc skips or gets stuck on a sec- tion of the compact disc, it is probablydirty or damaged (scratched). ? when cleaning the compact disc, wipe in straight lines from the center of the compact disc to the outer edgeof the compact disc. never wipe in circular motions. ? this unit is designed to play only compact discs bearing the identifica - tion logo as shown here. other discs may not conform to the cd stan- dard and may not play properly. ? compact discs should be stored in their cases after each use to avoid damage. ? do not expose compact discs to direct sunlight, high humidity, high temperatures or dust, etc. prolonged exposure or extreme temperatures can warp the compact disc. ? do not stick or write anything on either side of the compact disc. sharp writing instruments, or the ink, may damage the surface. cleaning the unit ? to prevent ?e or shock hazard, disconnect your unit from the ac power source when cleaning. ? the ?ish on your unit may be cleaned with a dust cloth and cared for as other fur- niture. use caution when cleaning and wiping the plastic parts. ? mild soap and a damp cloth may be used on the front panel. care and maintenance 15 b e n z e n e c l e a n e r
